I developed moderate acne as a teen and had it ever since (I am 27 now). I have been on all the prescription medications short of Accutane (no doctor ever felt that it was severe enough for Accutane). I have used ALL the over-the-counter and infomercial products. From various doctors I have received over the years: tetracycline, doxycycline, topical erythromycin, topical clindamycin, minocycline capsules, minocycline tablets, retin-A, retin-A micro, differin gel, differin cream, and azelex. There may be more I’ve forgotten.
None ever made ANY difference that I could see. The antibiotics seemed to help initially a little but not more than a 10% improvement.
One day I cracked a tooth and was told to take Motrin to control the pain/swelling. I was taking about 8-10 Motrin a day. After several days, my acne started clearing up mysteriously!
I put two and two together and continued taking Motrin well after my tooth was fixed. My acne was nearly gone after about 2 months, at which point I severely reduced my dosage. Today I am about 99% acne free and only take 2-4 ibuprofens a day to stay clear.
I told my doctor, and she was skeptical but could not deny that my acne was gone. She even went as far as to say she would consider giving her acne patients ibuprofen shots to help with redness.
Good luck! I hope this works for you too.
